In the offshore, high power drive systems are used. These drive systems are generaly based on hydraulics, but systems with electric drives are catching up. Electric drives use far less power than hydraulic drives and are generally more accurate. Controllab supports the development of hydraulic and electric drives by modeling and simulation and the design of advanced controllers.

Example

Pijpenlegger

The Solitaire is the biggest pipe-laying ship in the world. The ship can lay 10 km of pipe per day at a depth of almost 3 km. On the ship, pipe segments with a length of 24 m are welded together and lowered from the ships stern.

To keep the bendingforces in the pipe segments within limits, a 110 m long arch is mounted onto the ship. Special tensioners on the ship pull the pipe segments with just enough force to prevent them from falling into the sea. Controllab has helped to construct a model the pipe laying to investigate the screw's safety in case of a pipe breakage. Several scanario's where simulated to investigate unsafe places on the ship in case of a breakage.
